Contests are a great way to encourage families to have fun and become
involved in Family Week activities together. The cost is minimal
because businesses can donate their own prizes. The following
are some ideas for contests:
Family Time Contest
- The rules for the Family Time Contest are as follows: For each
hour a family spends together, they can fill out a form and enter
a drawing at various businesses throughout the community. (See the
sample page, which is reduced to make entry forms.)
- Prior to Family Week, contact businesses and ask them to
participate in the Family Time Contest. Participating businesses
will be given entry forms and an entry box.
- Each business is responsible for the drawing, providing a
prize, and contacting the winner.
- The contest runs through the entire week and each business holds
a drawing for a prize at the end of the contest.
- The Family Week committee helps by publicizing the contest and
the locations of businesses where families can enter.
- One of the popular Family Time Contests has been the "Grocery
Grab" or "Supermarket Sweep" sponsored by a local
grocery store where two families race down the isles grabbing as
many groceries as they can in a specified time.
Family Photo Contest
- Contact your local newspaper or local camera/photo store to see
if they will sponsor a Family Photo Contest.
- Decide on a theme and contest rules.
- Set the deadline one month prior to Family Week to allow time to
judge photos and award prizes.
Family History Contest
- Find a business or organization to sponsor a Family History
Contest. A possible prize could be a cash award for the family
to visit with their extended family.
- During Family Week have participants fill out a pedigree chart
(family tree) with as much information as possible and include on
the back a story about a person on their chart.
- Local genealogical societies, libraries or historical societies
can help by offering classes to help families complete their
pedigree chart.
- At the end of Family Week hold a drawing to select winning
family.
- Consider donating the completed pedigree charts to a local
genealogical or historical society after the contest is complete.
